Ka Umeke wins first home match
The Ka ‘Umeke Ka‘eo girls volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to notch its first win on Saturday morning at Kawananakoa Gym, its home court.
Ka Umeke hung on through a long fifth set to defeat Christian Liberty Academy 3-2 and move to a 1-1 record.
After Ka Umeke won the first set 25-20, the Canefire went on a run — winning the next two sets 25-11 and 25-15.
But, Ka Umeke was not done — and pushed through to win the fourth set 25-18 and the fifth 18-16.
Ka Umeke will look for another win this week across Hilo Bay, facing St. Joseph School (0-3) at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at the Hilo Armory.
Seasiders add another win
After suffering a tough loss to Ka‘u HS last week, Laupahoehoe Community PCS improved its record to 3-1 with a win over CLA on Monday.
The Seasiders won the first set 25-15, then the Canefire won set two 25-21. Laupahoehoe closed out the match by winning the next two sets 25-22 and 25-17.
Laupahoehoe will host Kohala HS on Friday, tipping off at 5 p.m.
CLA, now 0-4 and sitting at the bottom of the BIIF DII standings, will have the rest of the week to prepare to nab its first win.
The Canefire will play three games next week — at home on Monday against Hawaii Prep, away Wednesday at Konawaena and away Saturday at Kanu o ka ‘Aina.
Richardson roughwater swim scheduled
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Tuesday that the 2023 Richardson Rough Water Swim is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 22.
The annual event was postponed due to ADA accessibility renovations at Richardson Ocean Park, which are nearly complete.
The 1-mile open water race entry fee is $30, which covers the cost of shirts and the timing service. The deadline to enter is Oct. 10. No registration forms will be accepted after the Oct. 10 deadline or at the event.
Shirt quantities are limited, so early registration is encouraged. This year, no in-person registration will be accepted. All registration forms must be received or postmarked by Oct. 10 and must be mailed to: 2023 Roughwater Swim, 799 Pi‘ilani Street, Hilo, HI 96720.

Alani makes state history
Alani’s eight-touchdown night against the Cougars broke the Hawaii high school football record — set by himself with seven in 2022, which was also tied with PJ Minaya of Pac-Five in 2008.
Ka‘u handles Kohala in straight sets
Ka‘u girls volleyball handled Kohala in a 3-0 match victory on Monday night at home. The Trojans won in 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18.
Ka‘u (3-0 overall) will next play Makua Lani (0-2 overall) at 6 p.m. tonight at home. Kohala (2-1) will also be back in action tonight, facing Konawaena at 6 p.m. at home.
Konawaena beats Pahoa
Konawaena girls volleyball defeated Pahoa three sets to one on Friday on the road. The Wildcats are 2-0 in regular-season play while the Daggers move to 1-2.
Konawaena will return to the court at 6 p.m. tonight on the road against Kohala (2-1 overall), while Pahoa will travel to Waimea to take on HPA (3-0 overall) at 6 p.m. tonight at Castle Gym.
Corrections
Konawaena quarterback Keoki Alani threw for eight touchdowns in Saturday night’s win over Kea‘au, not nine — which was included in Monday’s paper. Wide receiver Zedekiah Anahu-Ambrosio deserves credit for the extra touchdown pass to receiver Austin Takaki in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Konawaena (4-1 overall) will also play Thursday’s game against Kealakehe (1-4 overall) at home, not on the road. Kickoff will begin following the junior varsity game, which starts at 5 p.m.
